Our history
Since 1970, we have constantly grown in key markets and built a powerful network with innovative partners.
Throughout our success story of over 50 years, we have grown organically, through public and private sector partnerships as well as via acquisitions. Today, we manage over two million parking spaces in over 13,000 locations, making us the No. 1 in Europe.
For the last few years, we have invested heavily in innovation through tech and data. Our aim is to continuously keep expanding and to realise our vision of bringing parking, mobility and urban life together in a future-proof and sustainable way.
1970 – Getting started
APCOA PARKING takes up operations in Germany and Austria as a subsidiary of Airport Parking Corporation of America (APCOA), an organization founded in Ohio in 1947.
1980s – Becoming a European player
We enter key markets such as the UK (1981), Italy (1985) and the Netherlands (1989).
1990s – Spreading across the continent
We establish a presence in Poland and in Belgium (both 1998). Further growth stems from the acquisition of IPI Antwerpen in Belgium (1998) and the EuroPark Group (1999), which allows us to build a presence in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
1991 – Becoming autonomous
Financed by venture capital company CWB Capital Partners, a management buy-out of APCOA’s European operations takes place.
1992 – Crossing boundaries
We take a very early start into EV charging: APCOA opens the first German solar power charging station in one of our car parks in Hamburg.
1995 – Going public
Our Group is first listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, where its shares are traded until the delisting in 2003.
1999 – A new majority shareholder
A majority of our shares is acquired by Salamander, a company that itself is purchased by EnBW in 2002, resulting in our delisting from the stock market one year later.
2000s – Continued expansion
We acquire the First Management Group in the UK (2000), Perpetum Parking in Sweden, Interpark in Norway and Mobile-for in Belgium (all 2006) and start operations in Switzerland (2005) and Ireland (2007).
2007 – A new owner
French-based investment company Eurazeo acquires our Group from Investcorp, who EnBW had sold a 98.3% stake to in 2004.
as of 2010 – New ventures
To improve customer experiences and adapt to the transformations of our fleets, we invest in tech companies like Get my Parking or Value Spaces. This provides us with access to cutting-edge technologies. And we upgrade car parks to Urban Hubs, teaming up with the who is who of logistics, mobility and charging.
2015 – A new US- and UK-based Investor
The group is majority owned by the private investment firm Centerbridge with Strategic Value Partners holding a minority stake.
as of 2018 – Further growth
We start operations in Luxembourg (2018). Recent acquisitions include Real Estate Schaffhausen in Switzerland (2018), OnePark in Denmark, NCPS Group in the UK (2019), XPERT Parkering Sweden and Security Park Group in Norway (2020), Alpina in Germany (2021) as well as Gemini Parking Solutions in the UK (2022).
2024 – New ownership
Strategic Value Partners, a global alternative investment firm and minority stakeholder since 2015, acquires 100% of APCOA from the previous majority owner Centerbridge.
